Botanic Map lanterns and sustainable art

Just a quick post. Here I am, playing with different types of papers and light for a lantern prototype for a series of light and paper works for an exhibition, using vintage maps, tracing paper, botanic rubbings with beeswax crayons, and exquisite watercolour paints and inks. I can’t say too much yet but I am excited to share this much.

These paper and light works will be part of a sustainable art exhibition, and I am very excited for this opportunity as this has been one of my dreams for a while, working with paper and light, to create organic botanic lanterns which bring light and hope and joy to a space. Why do I love lanterns so much? Because they bring light and joy to the world and they create a sense of peace in any space. To me they reflect the human soul which is a shining light. They serve as a reminder to us all to shine our light always. These lanterns use maps with botanical forms, creating a sense of human construction returning to nature, of human intervention of our landscapes disintegrating and returning to a new and changed, yet organic form. These lanterns are also going to be developed as part of the set design for my new theatre work in June, which is also about these themes of the human soul, connection with nature and the alteration of our landscape. So look out for more!

I will put these up in my shop when they are ready too so keep a look out!
